The Cabo de Gata Natural Park stretches from just south of Carboneras to El Retamar, near Almeria Airport. This natural park covers nearly 46,000 hectares of land on the Almeria coastline.

The landscapes includes volcanic rock, 100m high cliffs, secluded coves, wild and scenic beaches, rocky islands and coral reefs. The park is both terrestrial and marine and has a vast array of habitats for flora and fauna – mountains, coral reefs, cliffs, dunes, salt pans, salt marshes, inland arid areas, the sea, the saltwater lagoon, the Salinas de Cabo de Gata, and dry river beds.

The area has an average temperature of 18ºC and the lowest rainfall on the Spanish mainland. The park is an UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and is the largest reserve of its kind in the world.

This unique terrain is home to a host of flora and fauna, including Europe's only native palm, the Dwarf fan palm, wild olive trees, the Pink Snapdragon Antirrhinium Charidemi, 260 species of seaweed, flamingos, storks, oystercatchers, cranes, puffins, many types of lizard and the Latastes' Viper.
