Granada is the capital city of the province of Granada, located in the self-governing southern region of Andalucia, in the Spanish Kingdom. It’s nestled at the foot of the Sierra Nevada’s snowy mountains, home of fun filled activities like skiing, although there’s so much more to do in this historic city of winding streets.  Albaicin

Granada - A City of Culture, History, Tapas and the Best Bars!

Granada’s rich history can be seen at every turn, and tasted every night as you enjoy the tapas culture.  This bar-hoppingway of life will take you from one fun spot to another, on the nightly crawl that locals and visitors alike start from after dinner(which occurs late, about 22:00) and continues until 3:00 or 4:00, well into the early morning hours.

Granada’s past includes an event that changed all of human history in 1492, when King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella were able to wrest control of the city and country back from the Moors’ centuries of rule, to assert themselves as the power brokers of the new era. Before that, Granada was settled thousands of years earlier by the Ibero-Celtic people. A long line of other settlers and conquerors come through Granada over the centuries, from the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Greeks, Romans, Eastern Germanic tribes, Byzantines, to Jews and Moors. There was never a time when Granada’s history belonged to just one group of people.

JamonThe tapas culture, however, might be equally immediately enticing for today’s visitors as romping through the past.

Tapas bars today incorporate scenes from the fiestas and bullfights. Their snacks include the region’s cuisine: mussels soaked in sherry, pork loin, kebabs, jamon (cured ham) and fried soaked fresh cod are typical fare, all on the house to accompany your drinks, all night long.

Wine, beer from the local brewery, sangria, sherry and liquor are not too expensive, and are consumed with friends and newfound friends.


Granada Climate

The weather is rather moderate with four seasons. Mild winters (compared to Northern Europe), cool springs, warm summers, and perfect autumns are what one can expect in Granada. The lowest temperatures come in January and February; winter temperatures range around 12º C in the day to 3ºC at night (53-37º Fahrenheit), sometimes lower. Spring temperatures are cool and the months of July and August are the hottest, with temperatures ranging from 32-33º C (90 to 91º Fahrenheit) and 18ºC at night (64º Fahrenheit). In the summer, it is not unusual for temperatures to reach 40ºC in this city! 

 

Getting Around the City

If you are staying in Granada City and don't need to venture outside of the city, you can get around easily without hiring a car. You can either use taxis or the city buses which are brilliant and cover all of the city sights and Granada attractions. There are taxi ranks dotted around the city - at the train station, bus station, near El Corte Ingles department store and in the main squares. 

The city buses are a cheap way of getting around the city, with many trips just costing a euro. The main city bus station is situated on the Carretera de Jaen. Timetables and further details can be found at Granada Tourist Offices:-
