Malaga City is the main city of the Costa del Sol coastline in Andalucia. It is more than just the gateway to the Costa del Sol, being the location of the area's main airport, it is also a wonderful tourist hotspot in itself.

  Malaga City

Malaga City is Andalucia's second largest city and is also an important port on the Mediterranean coast of Spain. It is a bustling, vibrant, cosmopolitan city which should not be judged by its rather drab and scruffy outskirts, but rather by its attractive centre, historic buildings, beautiful beaches and lovely port area. No wonder it was Federico Garcia Lorca's favourite place!

Malaga Attractions

Malaga City attractions include:-

  • Historical sights – Malaga has a multitude of historical attractions, including the quaint Old Town area, the city's Alcazaba, the cathedral, the Castillo de Gibralfaro and the Palacio Episcopal.

  • Cultural Attractions – Malaga City was the birthplace of Pablo Picasso, the famous Spanish artist, and you can see some of his finest work in Malaga's Museo Picasso and you can also visit his birthplace, the Casa Natal de Picasso. Malaga also has a selection of museums.

  • Malaga Beaches – Malaga's coastal position means that after a morning of culture or shopping you can catch some rays and relax on one of the Malaga beaches. Beaches include the Playa del Palo, the Playa de la Malagueta and the Playa de Pedregalejo.

  • Gardens – If beaches are not your thing, or you're after some shade, you can relax in Malaga's Jardin Botanico, the city's lush botanical gardens.

  • Malaga Shopping – Shopaholics will love the posh boutiques and designer shops of the Calle Marqués de Larios, the El Corte Inglés department store, the indoor shopping centres, Sunday flea market and great choice of cafes for that much needed caffeine boost!
    Malaga Feria

  • Festivals and fiestas – Like all Spaniards, the people of Malaga love to celebrate and party. Malaga's main fiestas include Semana Santa (Holy Week) with its processions, the 9 day Feria de Malaga in August, the Film Festival in March and the International Jazz Festival (Festival Internacional de Jazz de Malaga) in November.

Malaga is already a wonderful city but is now in the running for European City of Culture, so many improvements are planned for the next few years. Good news for tourists and residents alike.
